Lean Metrics -
Think "Picture Books"
Quick, now: which can your read more quickly, Dr. Suess or Dostoevsky? If you answered Dostoevsky, feel free to return to our home page.
But if you are a fan of Sneetches or Sam-I-Am, you might want to ask yourself why. I would suggest it's that the ideas Dr. Suess presents are very easy (and quick) to learn because they are visual.
That is the kind of thinking we should apply to most of our business communications, including performance metrics. Back when I was a young plant manager, I would receive a 2-inch thick pile of green-bar 11 x 17 printouts that had every piece of data ever developed by the company on Friday afternoon. Every Friday it wuold go into the wastebasket so it could be collected by the weekend cleaning crew. I simply didn't have the patience to look for the truth that was hidden by "facts".
If you are trying to share results with your work force and management team through key measurements, remember the picture book lesson: keep it simple and easy to see. A graph, a schematic, a photo, or a cartoon will convey ideas quickly and clearly. Long paragraphs and tables won't.
